It was late one night in a room of near strangers. It was a mismatched affair in a mismatched room. The vast window looked over the city, its lights slowly dimming with the hour. The lights were golden inside: a lamp with a scarf thrown over it and the light from the kitchen spilled into the living room floor amongst the party-goers sitting on the floor or sofa or pile of winter coats we had donned. A guitar, a banjo and a mandolin were picked up one by one and strummed to this song. Sleepy voices came from corners of the room, harmonies whispered without thought. Together, a group of strangers sang.

The first thing I know about my great-grandfather is that when he was thirteen he ran away from home, which was around Burlington, to Windsor to work on the Ambassador bridge. He worked on the bridge until it got high enough that he realized that he was afraid of heights.

I saw this last night.

My friend that I saw it with had a very negative impression of it. She thought it was depressing and devastating, even. She said that the only time she felt at peace during the whole film was when there were no people in frame.

I disagreed. I thought that it was a profoundly uplifting film. Maybe I didn’t get it. Maybe I didn’t see the slant against western society. But I really liked it. I thought it was beautiful. I thought Rob Fricke treated each subject in the exact same manner and I appreciated that.

But maybe I didn’t get it.
